About this award / prize
Benefit
An outstanding final-year dissertation in the field of refractory materials is awarded a one-off cash prize. Refractory materials are a sub-field of ceramics engineering: materials that can withstand extreme heat and are used, for example, in furnaces and in steel production. A 2017 news report put the value of the prize at 1,800 euros. The university’s current website does not specify a fixed amount, so the sum may have changed since then. A committee at the Technical University of Leoben (formerly the Montanuniversität Leoben) awards the prize every year in memory of Hans Theisbacher and his wife Friedl. It has been awarded every year since 1992/93.
Eligibility
- What you submit: A diploma, master's or doctoral thesis in refractory materials.
- Where you studied: You completed your degree at the Technical University of Leoben and wrote your dissertation there.
- Grades: You have completed your degree with above-average results.
- Field of study: Your dissertation focuses on the field of refractory materials in ceramic engineering.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
- Good to know: This is a reward for a completed final dissertation. It is not an ongoing grant during the course of study.
How to apply
You should submit your application to the Chair of Ceramics at the Technical University of Leoben. The prize is awarded once a year. The current webpage does not specify a fixed application deadline.
How realistic are your chances?
This award has very strict criteria. You must have written an outstanding dissertation on refractory materials at a specific university, meaning that very few people qualify for it each year. If your dissertation clearly falls within this field and you have achieved excellent grades, your chances are good: the committee selects candidates from a small, specialised group rather than from a large pool of open applicants.
