What you get

For a semester of study at a partner university abroad, you will receive a living expenses allowance of monthly top-up of about EUR 146 to EUR 582, as well as a one-off travel allowance of up to 700 euros. The monthly lump sum depends on your destination: 146 euros for many Eastern European and Asian countries, 350 euros for Germany and France, 487 euros for the USA and the UK, and 582 euros for Japan. You will study there free of tuition fees, and the courses you pass will count towards your degree in Salzburg. The funding applies for the duration of your stay, ranging from one trimester or semester up to a full academic year. It is awarded by the Office for International Relations at the University of Salzburg. This is a grant rather than a full scholarship, so it covers only part of your costs.

Who can apply

• University: You are a student at the University of Salzburg. Graduates are not eligible to apply.
• Nationality: You are a national of an EU country.
• Subject: You are studying English, Romance languages or Slavonic studies (Modern Philology, Europe).
• Study progress: You have completed at least two semesters in Salzburg.
• Where you go: You’ll spend a semester at one of Salzburg’s partner universities around the world or as part of the International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP).
• Residence: You live mainly in Austria and have not yet started your stay abroad.
• Nomination: A programme coordinator (a member of staff who organises the exchange) must first nominate you.
• Other funding: The scholarship is primarily aimed at students who do not receive any other scholarships. Since June 2022, students who are already receiving an Austrian scholarship for study abroad have also been able to apply.

How to apply

Apply for the grant at the Office for International Relations as soon as your coordinator has nominated you, and always before the start of your stay abroad. There are four fixed deadlines each year: 15 November, 1 February, 1 April and 1 June. You have no legal entitlement to the grant. The decision is made by the coordinators in consultation with the Office.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is open exclusively to students from Salzburg studying specific language subjects who have already studied there for two semesters and have been nominated for an exchange programme; as a result, only a few people apply for it. If you have successfully completed the nomination process and meet the requirements regarding the duration of your stay and your academic progress, your chances are good, particularly if you have not been awarded any other scholarship. Make sure you apply in good time before your departure and meet one of the four application deadlines.
