About this award / prize
Hans Stegbuchner Award
For an outstanding final thesis in mathematics at the University of Salzburg, you will receive a one-off cash prize. The exact amount of the prize varies from year to year and depends on the type of thesis, with doctoral theses carrying a higher prize than Master’s theses. The Department of Mathematics awards the prize once a year, and the Raiffeisenverband Salzburg provides the prize money. Your thesis will also be presented at a ceremony, during which your supervisor will deliver a laudatory speech.
Who can apply
- University: You have completed your degree at the University of Salzburg (PLUS).
- Field of study: You studied mathematics. This award applies exclusively to the Department of Mathematics.
- Type of work: You wrote an outstanding Master's thesis, diploma thesis or doctoral dissertation.
- Study phase: You have completed your degree. The degree recognises the work you have already completed, not work that is still in progress.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
How to apply
The Department of Mathematics selects the prize winners itself, so there is no open online application process. If you believe that your final-year dissertation meets the criteria, please contact the department’s secretariat to enquire about the current round of applications.
How realistic are your chances?
This prize is very narrowly defined. It is awarded exclusively to the best mathematics dissertations from a single department at a university, and the department selects the winners itself, rather than issuing a public call for entries. The pool of candidates is small, but so is the number of prizes, meaning that truly outstanding work is recognised. If your maths final-year dissertation in Salzburg stands out and your supervisor supports it, you have a real chance of winning.
