About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive a 1,000 EUR scholarship for a one-month clinical placement in China in July, August or September. A clinical placement is a work placement in a hospital where you shadow doctors on the ward and assist them. You can go to Fudan University or Tongji University in Shanghai, or to the University of Hong Kong. The scholarship is funded by the EURASIA-PACIFIC UNINET network, an educational partnership between Austrian and Asian universities. The placement counts as one of your four optional, four-week compulsory clinical placements. You are responsible for covering your own travel and living expenses.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are enrolled on the degree programme in Medicine at the Medical University of Vienna.
- Study stage: You are in at least your 3 academic year (5 semester). You have passed the SIP 1 as well as the modules ‘Medical Communication A’, ‘Basic Medical Skills’, ‘Physical Examination’ and ‘Introductory Clinical Placement’.
- Prior placement: You have already completed at least one further clinical placement, or have a firm plan to do so, and can provide evidence of this.
- English: Your English is very good.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply; the key requirement is that you are studying at the Medical University of Vienna.
- One place only: You can apply for both this EPU programme and the ASEA programme. If you are offered a place on both programmes, you will need to choose one.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted via the ‘Mobility-Online’ portal of the Medical University of Vienna. The application deadline is 30 November of the year prior to the start of your stay abroad. Applicants are assessed primarily on the basis of their grade point average and academic progress. Social commitment and personal obstacles to a stay abroad are also taken into account.
How realistic are your chances?
This funding is available exclusively to medical students from Vienna who have already reached the clinical years of their degree and have completed a clinical placement; the pool of applicants is therefore small. Places are allocated on the basis of grades and academic progress, so good academic performance is your strongest asset. Social commitment is also taken into account in the ranking, and preference is given to students who are unable to spend a full semester abroad. If you meet the requirements regarding academic progress and have solid grades, your chances are realistic.
