City of Graz - Work Scholarship

Work Scholarship for Visual Arts of the City of Graz

You will receive a one-off grant of 5,000 EUR to support your ongoing work as a visual artist. The City of Graz awards two of these grants each year. In return, you will present the results of your work to the public in Graz within one year of receiving the grant. The grant recognises artists based in Graz and helps them to continue their work.

Who can apply

• Who it is for: You are a visual artist and work in the fields of painting, graphic art, sculpture, object art, or media and internet art.
• Link to Graz: You were born in Graz, live in Graz, or have the focus of your work in the city.
• Track record: You have exhibited your work publicly in Graz at least once and can provide evidence of this in the form of documentation or a catalogue.
• Quality: A panel of judges will assess the artistic quality of your work.
• Nationality: Open to people of all nationalities. What matters is your connection to Graz, not your passport.
• Studies: You do not need to be enrolled at a higher education institution. The aim here is to support your artistic practice, not to award a degree.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted by email to the City of Graz’s Cultural Office; all documents must be in German. The exact deadline is announced each year by mid-January and is usually around the end of February. A panel of experts assesses the applications, and the city’s cultural committees make the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly exclusive: only two are awarded each year, and you must be a visual artist with a clear connection to Graz and a proven track record of public exhibitions in the city. This means the pool of eligible applicants is small, so a suitable local artist with a solid exhibition record has a genuine chance of winning. Your portfolio and the quality of your art are crucial – so be sure to present your strongest works in a compelling way.
