Farm Animal Award

You receive a one-time prize of 4,000 EUR for an outstanding doctoral thesis (your PhD dissertation) on farm animals. The award comes from the Society of Friends of the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna (Freunde der VUW). It honours research that tackles practical questions relevant to veterinary work with livestock.

Who can apply

• Degree: You have written a doctoral thesis in veterinary medicine.
• Field of study: Your thesis is about farm animals and answers questions that matter for everyday veterinary practice.
• Where you studied: You earned your doctorate at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna.
• Quality: Your thesis is an outstanding piece of work. This prize goes to the best submission.

How to apply

Send your application to the general secretariat of the Society of Friends of the VUW in Vienna by 1 July each year. A panel of experts reviews the submissions, and the society's board of trustees makes the final decision.

How realistic are your chances?

This is a single, tightly focused award. Only one thesis on farm animals from one university wins it each year, so the eligible group is small but the standard is high. If your dissertation clearly fits the livestock focus and is genuinely strong, your chances are real, because few people qualify. The deciding factor is the quality and practical relevance of your work, not the number of applicants.
