About this scholarship

What you get as an OeAD Lektor

A lecturer is a language and culture tutor at a foreign university. You will teach the German language and Austrian culture abroad and will be paid by two parties. The host university will draw up a local employment contract with you, under which you will be paid in accordance with the standard local pay scale for teaching staff. In addition, the OeAD (Austrian Agency for International Education and Mobility) provides Austrian funding. Exactly how this works depends on where you are going:

  • Posts in the EU and the United Kingdom: an additional allowance of up to 24,400 euros per year, depending on your local salary and your country.
  • Posts outside the EU: an employment contract with the OeAD. You will receive a gross monthly salary of 1,737.80 EUR, paid 14 times a year.

You can receive funding for up to 5 years. In addition, you will receive a travel allowance of up to 1,500 EUR for one return journey per year, a funded preparatory stay at your future university (one-off, up to 1,500 EUR for travel and accommodation), a one-off book allowance of up to 300 EUR, as well as subscriptions to Austrian magazines and newspapers. New lecturers will also complete a certificate course at the University of Vienna (20 ECTS across three modules, each taking place in Vienna in July). You will teach 12 to 14 hours per week in the subjects of language, cultural studies and literature, and advise local students who wish to study in Austria.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You hold a completed Magister or Master's degree (a PhD also counts) in a humanities or cultural-studies subject from an Austrian university. You must have the certificate in hand when you start.
  • How recent your degree is: Your degree must not have been awarded more than 7 years prior to the date you take up your post.
  • German skills: You speak German at level C2 and are able to teach the Austrian variant of the language.
  • Where you live: Your main place of residence was in Austria during the two years prior to your departure. Any time spent under other government mobility programmes will not be taken into account.
  • Teaching German as a Foreign Language: Previous experience in this field is an advantage, but not essential.

How to apply

You apply online via the OeAD platform (lektorat.scholarships.at) between the start of December and the application deadline on 15 January. If your application passes the initial screening, you will be invited to Vienna in February for an interview with a panel of three or four people. If you are successful in this stage, you will then apply for up to four specific posts. The host universities make the final selection themselves. The academic year begins on 1 September.
