About this scholarship

Inge Dirmhirn Scholarship

You will receive up to 2,400 EUR as a grant to support the completion of your Master’s thesis at BOKU in Vienna. The amount will be paid in two instalments. Firstly, you will receive 1,900 EUR as soon as your supervisor confirms that you have started work on your thesis. You can then apply for up to 500 EUR in additional funding to cover fees, travel and accommodation costs if you give a talk or present a poster at an international academic event. This funding is provided by BOKU’s Equal Opportunities Working Group and is intended to enable you to write your thesis without financial worries.

Who can apply

  • Degree level: You are enrolled on a Master’s degree programme at BOKU (University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna).
  • Thesis topic: Your thesis should address gender and/or diversity issues in relation to BOKU’s academic disciplines. Interdisciplinary and creative approaches are particularly welcome.
  • Language: You must write your final thesis in German or English.
  • Timing: You start the thesis by 1 February 2027 and pass it within one year.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • No BOKU job: The scholarship is intended for students who are not employed by BOKU. If you are employed by BOKU, the scholarship will be treated as taxable income for the purposes of your income tax assessment.

How to apply

Please email your application as a single PDF file to the Equal Opportunities Working Group by 15 November 2026. A panel of at least three people will review your application. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to give a short presentation, either in person or via video. The decision will be made on 15 December 2026.

How realistic are your chances?

This award has very specific eligibility criteria: only BOKU Master’s students who are writing a Master’s thesis on the topic of gender or diversity with a clear link to BOKU’s academic disciplines are eligible to apply; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. If your Master’s thesis does indeed focus on this topic and you can justify this convincingly and comprehensively, your chances are good. A clear, interdisciplinary research proposal and a well-reasoned supporting letter from your supervisor will make your application stand out from the rest.
