What the merit scholarship gives you

You will receive a one-off payment of up to 1,500 EUR. This is not a monthly scholarship, but a one-off award for outstanding academic achievement during the past academic year. It is paid by the University of Music and Performing Arts, Vienna (MUK, formerly the Vienna Conservatoire).

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are a full-time student at the MUK in Vienna, regardless of your course of study (music, dance, drama, singing, musical theatre, music education and more).
• Degree level: You are a Bachelor’s or Master’s student.
• Nationality: You are a national of an EU or EEA country, or you are stateless, or you are a foreign national with an equivalent status under Austrian law.
• Grades: Your weighted average mark is 2.00 or higher on the Austrian grading scale (1 is the highest mark, so this figure is well above average).
• Credits earned last year: You have earned at least 50 ECTS credits on a bachelor’s degree programme (47 for the BA programme in Composition) or 40 ECTS credits on a master’s degree programme, or you have graduated with distinction. ECTS credits are the credits you receive for successfully completing modules.
• Semesters completed: You have completed at least 4 semesters on a Bachelor’s degree programme or 2 semesters on a Master’s degree programme in the subject area for which you are applying.
• First time only: You have not previously received this scholarship at MUK. It can only be awarded once per person.
• On schedule: You are within the standard duration of study for your degree programme plus one semester. Extensions may be granted in the event of illness, pregnancy or other unavoidable circumstances.

How to apply

Applications are accepted once a year by the MUK Student Services Organisation. The application deadline is 15 October. Please submit a complete application, as incomplete applications will not be considered. Applicants will be ranked according to their grade point average and ECTS credits, and each applicant will be notified whether they have been accepted.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is intended exclusively for MUK students who achieve a grade point average of 2.00 or higher, as well as a specified number of ECTS credits; the pool of eligible candidates is therefore already small. Places are allocated strictly on the basis of grades and ECTS credits, so your chances depend solely on your academic performance. The better your results were in the last academic year, the higher your ranking will be. If you clearly meet the thresholds, it is definitely worth applying.
