Tirol Landesgedaechtnisstiftung student scholarship

You will receive a sum of one-off payment of 300 to 3,000 EUR, which you will never have to repay, for one academic year in Austria. If you are studying a subject abroad that is not offered in Austria, there is a separate grant of between 500 and 5,000 euros. The amount depends on your household income: the lower your income, the higher the payment. The money comes from the Landesgedächtnisstiftung, a foundation of the Austrian federal state of Tyrol. It supplements the state study grant if this is not available or is insufficient.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You are studying full-time on a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree programme. PhDs do not count.
• Where you study: You are studying at a recognised university, university of applied sciences, academy, private university or conservatoire with public status in Austria. Studies undertaken in the EEA, Switzerland or outside Europe will only be recognised in exceptional cases, for example if they relate to a subject area not offered in Austria.
• Field of study: Any topic is fine.
• Home base in Tyrol: Your main place of residence is in Tyrol. This applies to Austrian nationals, EU/EEA nationals and Swiss nationals resident in Tyrol, recognised refugees and certain non-EU nationals who have been living in Tyrol for at least five years.
• Age: When applying, the provisions set out under 30 apply to you.
• Financial need: Despite having a genuine need, you receive no state study grant, or only an insufficient amount. Your monthly net household income is below the thresholds, for example around 3,775 EUR for two people or 4,422 EUR for four people.
• Not funded: Short-term stays of one or two semesters (e.g. as part of the Erasmus programme or as a ‘free mover’), language courses, summer schools, work placements abroad, distance-learning programmes and courses for working professionals.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the online form on the Tyrolean regional portal by 30 April of the relevant academic year. A committee of the foundation will review your application, decide whether to award the scholarship and notify you in writing.

How realistic are your chances?

This grant scheme is very narrowly defined. You must be resident in Tyrol, have an income below 30, and demonstrate a genuine financial need, as federal assistance is insufficient. As a result, the pool of eligible applicants remains small, meaning that a suitable applicant who can demonstrate this need has a good chance of success. There is no legal entitlement to the grant, and the amount is determined by income; therefore, a clear, well-documented justification is of the utmost importance.
