About this grant / loan

What you get

You get an interest-free loan of up to 25,000 EUR. You only repay what you actually spend and can prove. You repay in 8 yearly instalments, starting from the third year after you receive the money. In rare cases the Board may instead give you a scholarship you do not repay, but this is exceptional. There are two types of loan:

  • Specialisation loan: for further study abroad after your Master's, such as a PhD, a fellowship (a funded research or study post) or a research project. It can cover tuition and registration fees, travel, accommodation, study materials, a computer and insurance.
  • Installation loan: to help you get started in your career, for example for furniture, work equipment, a computer, specialist books and up to 6,000 euros for a vehicle.

The Fernand Lazard Foundation has been supporting young university graduates in Belgium since 1949.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You must hold at least a Master’s degree (or an equivalent higher education qualification) from a Belgian university or a higher education institution. You may apply whilst still in your final year of study.
  • Nationality: You are a national of an EU Member State.
  • Field of study: Any topic is allowed.
  • Your plan: You either want to study abroad (specialisation loan) or start your career (installation loan).

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Foundation’s application portal. You will need to upload your CV, your academic transcripts, a personal statement and a financial plan. The application deadline is 5 February each year. Two letters of recommendation from professors may be submitted separately by 15 February. The board meets at the end of March to decide on the selection, and successful applicants will be notified by email.
