About this scholarship

WBI.World Excellence Scholarship (short-term)

You will receive 2,120 EUR net per month for a research stay abroad lasting from 1 to 3 months. This is a lump-sum mobility allowance, not a salary. In addition, WBI will cover your return flight in economy class as well as travel health insurance for your stay abroad, which covers medical costs and repatriation. For stays in North America, Canada or Switzerland, additional health insurance will also be provided. Upon application, registration or course fees of up to 835 EUR may be reimbursed. The scholarship is awarded by Wallonia-Brussels International (WBI), the public body responsible for international relations within the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in Belgium.

Who can apply

  • Degree and plan: You hold a Master’s degree (120 credits) and would like to pursue a PhD abroad, OR you have already completed a PhD and would like to carry out postdoctoral research abroad.
  • Link to Wallonia-Brussels: Your qualification was awarded by a higher education institution run or funded by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation. If you obtained your qualification abroad, you must provide evidence of a current, active connection to a higher education institution in Wallonia-Brussels.
  • Timing for postdocs: You completed your PhD no more than 5 years ago. This time limit may be extended if you have had a child or have been caring for a child.
  • Field of study: All subject areas are eligible. Preference will be given to the fields of transport and logistics, mechanical engineering, life sciences, the agri-food industry, aerospace and environmental technologies. For other subject areas, please explain how your project could benefit Wallonia.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply, as long as you meet the link to a Wallonia-Brussels institution above.
  • Attempts and gaps: You may apply a maximum of 3 times, and there must be a gap of 3 years between two short stays.

How to apply

Please email your complete application to the WBI. There are two application deadlines: 1 October for stays between March and July, and 1 April for stays between September and February. A selection panel will assess the applications, and the WBI will award the scholarships within the limits of its budget. You will be notified of the result in early January or early July, and will then have 7 days to accept the offer.
