About this award / prize

What you get

You will win 1,250 EUR for an original scientific paper that answers the question set for that year. The Science Section of the Royal Academy of Belgium (Académie royale de Belgique) organises this competition every year and may award up to six prizes of this amount. Each year, it publishes a specific question from the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry or biology, and your entry must directly answer this question. The prize-winners are honoured at a public session of the Academy, which usually takes place in December.

Who can apply

  • Qualifications: None. The competition is open to everyone.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Your topic: Your work must answer this year’s question, which is taken from the fields of mathematics, physics, chemistry or biology.
  • Your work: It must be original and not yet published as a book. You may submit a thesis or dissertation you handed in for a degree. The text can be up to 250 pages long.

How to apply

Please send three copies of your work to the Academy in Brussels and clearly state which question you are answering. You may remain anonymous: sign with a motto and enclose a sealed envelope containing your name. Your submission must be received before the deadline published for the relevant year. Late entries will not be accepted.
