About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a one-off travel grant of 1,000 EUR for a study or work placement lasting from 1 to 6 months in a developing country. The grant covers your return economy-class flight from Belgium, your living costs abroad, local travel, and minor equipment and materials for your project. If your documented costs amount to less than 1,000 EUR, you must repay the difference. The grant is provided by the Royal Academy for Overseas Sciences (KAOWARSOM) in Brussels. You may only receive it once.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a Belgian student.
  • University: You are enrolled at a Belgian university.
  • Degree: You are studying bioengineering (formerly agricultural engineering) or veterinary medicine.
  • Your project abroad: You plan an internship or thesis stay of 1 to 6 months in a developing country. The trip must take place before the end of the academic year after you apply.
  • Supervision: A professor will supervise your project and provide you with support.

How to apply

Please send the application form, completed by you and your supervisor, to the Academy’s secretariat by 31 March each year. Please enclose your CV, a letter of motivation and your supervisor’s assessment of you and the project. A selection committee will review all applications, and the Academy’s Class for Natural and Medical Sciences will make its decision at its May meeting.
