About this scholarship
What the fellowship gives you
A scholarship is a form of financial support that enables you to complete your research. You will receive a monthly grant of up to 12 months to help you complete your doctoral thesis during the final year of your studies. The monthly amount corresponds to the standard FRIA/FRESH scholarship rate for PhD students in Belgium and is tax-free in accordance with Belgian regulations governing PhD scholarships. The Research Council of the University of Mons (CRECH) will cover up to half of the costs. Your research institute at UMONS or another source of funding will usually cover the remainder. This is intended to give you additional time should your existing funding run out before your thesis is completed.
Who can apply
- Where you study: You are enrolled as a PhD student at the University of Mons (UMONS) in Belgium.
- Stage of your PhD: You are nearing the end of your doctoral thesis and need more time to complete it. This applies in particular to fourth-year PhD students.
- Earlier funding: You have already received external funding for at least 3 years, but for fewer than 4 years, for example in the form of an FNRS/FRIA grant, a European project or funding from another external organisation.
- Tax status: You meet the criteria for the Belgian tax exemption for PhD scholarships.
- Field of study: Any subject.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
How to apply
You should submit your application to the Research Council (CRECH) via the UMONS Research Administration Office (AVRE). Your research institute may provide its own funds for co-financing in addition to the CRECH grant.
