About this award / prize

Eugène Yourassowsky Award

For an outstanding doctoral thesis in the field of medical microbiology and infectious diseases, you will receive a one-off prize of 15,000 EUR. The amount is divided into two parts: 7,500 EUR goes to you and 7,500 EUR to the laboratory in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation (the French-speaking part of Belgium) where you completed your PhD. The prize is awarded by the Fund for Scientific Research (FNRS) in Belgium and funded by a private donor. It is awarded every four years. The last call for applications took place in 2024, so the next one is expected to take place in 2028.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You have completed your PhD and publicly defended your thesis.
  • Where you studied: You defended your doctoral thesis at a university in the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, the French-speaking part of Belgium.
  • Field: Your doctoral thesis is an original contribution to medical microbiology and infectious diseases.
  • Timing: You recently defended your doctoral thesis. For the 2024 call for applications, the thesis had to be defended between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2023.
  • Not already rewarded: Your thesis has not won a previous prize, unless it was only an honorary one.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted in English by email to the FNRS Awards Office. You must submit the signed application form, a CV, your full list of publications and an electronic copy of your doctoral thesis. The deadline 2024 was 4 March 2024. An independent panel of experts will then review the applications and meet in the spring. The prize will be awarded to one candidate and cannot be shared.
