About this scholarship

What the Otto Bruuns Foundation funds

You will receive a grant of 20,000 to 50,000 DKK (about 4,700 EUR on average) per project. The money will cover specific costs such as materials, equipment or other expenses relating to the development of your invention or project. In some cases, the foundation also provides subordinated capital, i.e. funds that are repaid only after other creditors have been repaid. The Otto Bruuns Fund is a Danish charitable foundation established by the inventor Otto Bruun, who introduced the toothpaste tube and the aluminium cup to Denmark. It awards around 3 million DKK annually across all its funding areas.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are an inventor, an entrepreneur or a small business developing an industrial invention or product. You may also apply as a small institution, organisation or association carrying out a project of general social benefit.
  • Your project: In industrial projects, the focus is on ‘hard tech’, i.e. physical products and technologies. Software projects are only funded in rare cases. Your project should be realistic and well thought out, ideally with a business plan and initial signs of customer interest.
  • Not for personal needs: The grant must be essential to the completion of a specific project. The Foundation does not fund personal living expenses. This is not a PhD or study scholarship.
  • Field: Any field is open, provided the project serves industrial development or the wider public good.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.

How to apply

You can apply at any time of the year using the online form on the Foundation’s website. The Board meets four times a year and will consider your application at its next meeting. The deadlines are on 1 February, 1 May, 1 September and 1 November. Rejections are usually made without giving reasons, and you may reapply in a later round.
