About this grant / loan
What you get
SU (Statens Uddannelsesstøtte) is the state student grant in Denmark. If you are studying full-time and do not live with your parents, you will receive a monthly grant of up to 6,820 DKK (about 785 EUR). If you live with your parents, the grant is lower and depends on your parents’ income; it ranges from 1,060 DKK to 2,940 DKK per month (approximately 142 to 395 EUR). The grant is taxable, and tax is deducted automatically each month.
You will receive a monthly grant instalment (SU-klip, a monthly payment unit), up to 70 instalments for the duration of your higher education. If you start your first degree programme within two years of leaving school, you will receive the standard duration of your programme plus 12 additional instalments. In addition to the grant, you can take out an optional government student loan of up to 3,489 DKK per month (approximately 468 EUR), which is repaid over a period of 7 to 15 years. The SU also provides you with a reduced-fare travel card for public transport (Ungdomskort). The scheme is administered by the Danish Agency for Higher Education and Science and paid out by Udbetaling Danmark.
From 1 January 2027, the following will apply to students who commence a new higher education programme on or after 1 July 2025: a lower cap of 58 funding instalments and no 12 supplementary instalments. Students with a disability and single parents will retain the supplementary instalments.
Who can apply
- Age: You are at least 18 years old.
- Nationality: You are a Danish national. Citizens of the EU or the EEA may be eligible under certain conditions, for example if they work or reside in Denmark. Citizens from non-EU or non-EEA countries are not usually eligible, with exceptions for recognised refugees and certain long-term residents.
- Course: You are studying in Denmark on a state-recognised full-time degree programme. All subjects are open to you.
- Active study: You attend lectures, sit exams and play an active part in your degree programme.
- Side income: Your monthly income whilst studying is less than 19,056 DKK (approximately 2,555 EUR). If you earn more than this, you will have to repay part of the grant.
- No double support: You are not currently receiving any other state benefits to help cover your living costs.
SU is a legal right, not a competition. If you meet the conditions, you get it, whatever your family background.
