Grants for jointly supervised doctoral theses at the University of Málaga

You will receive 1,111 EUR for a research placement abroad whilst undertaking your PhD. This funding supports a doctoral thesis under a joint supervision arrangement (cotutela): two supervisors from universities in two different countries will supervise your research, and both the University of Málaga and a partner university abroad will award you a doctoral degree upon completion. You will spend at least 9 months at the partner institution abroad, either in a single block or spread over several periods. The scholarship is administered by the University of Málaga’s Doctoral School.

Who can apply

• Level: You are a PhD student at the University of Málaga.
• Active enrolment: Your enrolment is still valid as of the application deadline.
• Joint-supervision agreement: Your dissertation will be carried out under a formal cotutela agreement between the University of Málaga and a foreign university, signed by the vice-chancellors of both institutions.
• Where you go: You will be spending your placement at the partner university abroad, not in Spain and not in your country of residence.
• Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. If you are from a country outside the EU, you will need a valid residence permit.
• No double funding: You will not receive any further funding to cover the same costs.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Doctoral School’s application portal. Calls for applications are issued twice a year, with application deadlines around 31 March and 31 October. A committee of the Doctoral School reviews the applications and decides who will receive funding.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is very restricted. You must already have a signed cotutela agreement with a foreign university and be enrolled at the University of Málaga, meaning that only a small group of PhD students meet the eligibility criteria. If you clearly meet these conditions and apply during one of the two annual application periods, your chances are good.
