About this award / prize

What you get

You will receive a one-off research prize of 3,000 EUR (before tax). You will also receive a medal and a certificate from the Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, as well as a medal from the Pablo de Olavide University. Two prizes are awarded in each round: one in the experimental sciences and one in the social sciences. The Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla, a historic body based in Seville, funds the prize and organises it in collaboration with the Pablo de Olavide University. The prize recognises a single outstanding piece of work and is not a rolling monthly scholarship.

Who can apply

  • Where you work: You work as a professor or researcher with a PhD at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville.
  • Age: On the last day of the application period, you are 35 years old or younger. For each child born before your 35th birthday, you are granted an additional year.
  • Your work: You must submit an original paper that was published in the year of the call for entries or in one of the two preceding years. You must be the sole or lead author.
  • Field: Your work falls into one of two fields: experimental sciences or social sciences.
  • Not a repeat winner: You have never won this prize before.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the University’s electronic portal (Sede Electrónica). The application deadline is short: 15 working days from the date on which the call for applications is published on the University’s official research noticeboard. A selection panel chaired by the Vice-Chancellor will then make a decision based on the quality of your work and your research achievements to date. You will be notified of the result within three months of the application deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

This award has very strict eligibility criteria: only PhD students from a single university, supervised by 35, in one of two specialist fields may apply for just two awards per year. The pool of eligible candidates is small, but every applicant is an accomplished early-career researcher, so the quality of your published work is decisive. If you clearly meet the criteria and have produced compelling, original work, your chances are realistic. The jury may also decide not to award a prize if no submission meets the requirements.
