University of Salamanca/Santander Universities - International Doctoral Scholarships

What you get

You will receive 600 EUR per month for 9 months for a full-time PhD programme at the University of Salamanca in Spain. Your tuition fees will be waived, and you will be provided with health and travel insurance, including accident cover. Payments will be made monthly from October. Approximately 98 to 103 places are awarded per cycle. If you are due to defend your thesis shortly (in less than six months), you will instead receive 600 EUR for 3 months as part of a shortened version of the programme. The scholarship is administered by the University of Salamanca in collaboration with Banco Santander.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are studying for a PhD at the University of Salamanca in Spain, either as a new student or as a student already enrolled.
• Level: You are undertaking a full-time PhD programme, either as a current student or as a recent graduate.
• Nationality: You are a national of one of the 20 Latin American countries, such as Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia or Peru.
• Starting a new PhD: If you are just starting your PhD, you must meet the official Spanish entry requirements for PhD programmes and pre-register in Salamanca.
• Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.
• Other funding: You may not receive any other Salamanca scholarship at the same time.

How to apply

You must apply via two channels simultaneously: using the online form on the ‘Salamanca International Relations’ website and via the Banco Santander platform. If you fail to complete either of these steps, your application will be automatically rejected. Please submit your application documents in Spanish. The application deadline is 28.06. A selection panel will assess each application on the basis of your CV and your academic results (70%), as well as your research proposal (30%). You will receive a response by email by the end of July.

How realistic are your chances?

The selection criteria are strictly defined: only students from 20 Latin American countries who are studying at this particular Spanish university are eligible. With around 100 places per cycle, the prospects are good if you can demonstrate good grades and a clear research proposal. There is one catch, however: priority is given to renewing scholarships for existing scholarship holders, meaning that new applicants will only be awarded funding if there are any funds left over. This makes a compelling application all the more important.
