About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a grant towards your travel, accommodation and living expenses whilst working on your PhD abroad as part of a ‘co-tutelle’ scheme. A ‘co-tutelle’ is a jointly supervised PhD programme: You will write your doctoral thesis under a formal agreement between the University of Seville and a partner university in another country. The University of Seville allocates a total amount of 30,000 EUR per annual call for applications amongst the selected students, so the exact amount depends on how many are selected. In recent calls for applications, this amount was approximately 728 EUR per student. The grant supports the University’s aim of making its doctoral programmes more international.

Who can apply

  • Level: You are enrolled as a doctoral student on a PhD programme at the University of Seville this academic year.
  • Field of study: All subjects are open.
  • Where you go: You are currently working at a partner university outside your country of usual residence as part of a co-tutelle programme, or will be doing so in the year of the call for applications.
  • Agreement in place: The joint supervision agreement between the two universities has been signed, or has at least been approved by the Governing Board of the University of Seville.
  • Nationality: All nationalities can apply.
  • First time: You did not receive this grant in a previous call for applications.

How to apply

You apply online via the ‘Plan Propio de Docencia’ website and submit your application documents either online or in person to the University of Seville’s registrar’s office. For the last call for applications, the deadline was in early March. A committee from the International Doctoral School assesses the proposals in terms of quality (40%), international focus (40%) and strategic relevance (20%). You will be notified of the result within 30 days of the deadline.

How realistic are your chances?

The pool of eligible applicants is small: you must already be a PhD student in Seville and have a co-supervision agreement, meaning that only a few people are competing for this scholarship. If you clearly meet these criteria and submit a compelling application, your chances are good. There is one catch: funding depends on the annual budget, and the 2026 call for applications was withdrawn due to a lack of funds. Apply as soon as a new call for applications is published.
