Ramón Areces Foundation postgraduate scholarship abroad

You will receive 2,100 EUR net per month for postgraduate study at a university or research centre outside Spain. Funding for a Master’s programme is provided for one academic year and may be extended by a further year, meaning that the funding period is up to 24 months. In addition to the monthly scholarship, the foundation will cover your enrolment and tuition fees at the foreign university, one return economy-class flight per year between your place of residence and your place of study, and travel insurance. The scholarship is awarded by the Fundación Ramón Areces in Madrid. Language courses and conference attendance are not covered.

Who can apply

• Nationality: You are a Spanish citizen.
• Where you go: You are studying at any university or research centre outside Spain.
• Field of study: Your degree programme is in the field of economics or EU law, for example economic analysis, applied economics, business administration, economic history or commercial distribution.
• Degree: You must hold a bachelor’s degree (Grado/Licenciado) or a master’s degree that qualifies you for admission to your chosen degree programme. You may also apply whilst in your final year of study, but you must subsequently provide proof that you have obtained your degree.
• Admission: You have been accepted onto the study abroad programme. You can submit proof of this at a later date.
• Language: You have a very good command of the language in which your degree course is taught.
• No double funding: You are not currently receiving any other scholarship or similar financial support.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the Foundation’s website during the application period, which takes place in winter. The most recent application rounds closed on 3 March and 22 February. You must also provide the details of at least two referees, who will be asked separately to submit their letters of reference. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to an online interview before the final decision is made.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding scheme is very narrowly defined. You must be a Spanish national, be studying economics or EU law, and be going abroad, meaning that the pool of eligible applicants is far smaller than for an open scholarship. In recent award rounds, around 21 people were awarded grants to study at institutions such as the London School of Economics and Johns Hopkins University; the requirements regarding admission and grades are therefore high. If you clearly meet the subject requirements, already have a promising offer of a place abroad and apply during the winter period, your chances are good.
