What the fellowship covers

A scholarship is a form of research funding for early-career researchers. This scholarship is awarded by the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC) in the Canary Islands, Spain. It covers the running costs of your doctoral research, rather than providing a fixed monthly salary. The following costs are reimbursed:

• Are you travelling to a national or international conference to present your work?
• Research stays of more than one month at another institution
• The costs of submitting and defending your dissertation, including printing, binding and defence fees
• Translation or publication fees for articles in peer-reviewed specialist journals

The maximum amounts are set anew each year as part of the annual call for proposals. The amount therefore depends on the specific measure and the budget for that particular year.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are a member of a research group at the ULPGC or are enrolled on one of its official PhD programmes.
• Career stage: You are a early-career researcher or a PhD student. The fund is also aimed at young teaching and research staff, as well as staff working on competitive research projects.
• Field of study: All participants are eligible to take part.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. There is no age limit.
• Limit per year: You may receive a maximum of two grants per year. PhD students may receive a maximum of one grant per year, exclusively for attending a conference.

How to apply

Apply for funding as part of the ULPGC’s annual call for applications, which is published at the start of each year. Use the standard form provided by the Research Office and attach supporting documents detailing the activity and the associated costs. There is no interview. The decision is based solely on the documents you submit. Funding is awarded in the order in which applications are received, subject to the budget being available. You should therefore apply as early as possible.

How realistic are your chances?

This fund is open exclusively to individuals who are already working in research groups or PhD programmes at the ULPGC. The pool of eligible applicants is small and internal; this is not a public selection process. If you are a PhD student there and your work aligns with the research focus, your chances are good, as the funding is not awarded on a competitive basis but in the order in which applications are received. The biggest risk is timing: apply early, before the budget runs out.
