About this scholarship
What the Training Scholarship covers
Travel and living expenses for a clinical training placement outside the Canary Islands – whether in other parts of Spain or abroad – will be covered. The placement lasts between three weeks and three months, or up to six months in exceptional cases. The Foundation provides a monthly allowance towards your travel and living expenses; please refer to the current call for applications for the exact amount. The aim is for you to learn a new surgical or medical technique or protocol at a specialist clinic and to bring this knowledge directly back to your hospital. The scholarship is awarded by the Fundación Canaria Doctor Manuel Morales, a foundation based on the island of La Palma which has been supporting doctors and healthcare professionals since the 1990s.
Who can apply
- Your job: You are a member of the medical staff – whether in a permanent post or still in training – and work under the medical supervision of a public hospital belonging to the Servicio Canario de Salud (the Canary Islands’ public health service).
- Field: You work in the medical sector or in healthcare.
- Where you train: You are undertaking your training at a specialist clinic outside the Canary Islands, in Spain or in another country.
- What you learn: Your training must include a new technique or procedure that you can apply directly in your own hospital.
- Nationality: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. The key factor is your role within the healthcare sector in the Canary Islands.
- Age: Open to all age groups, although preference will be given to applicants under 55.
How to apply
Please send your application to the Chair of the Fundación Canaria Doctor Manuel Morales in Tazacorte, La Palma, and forward a copy of the documents by email. For the last documented call for applications, the deadline was 31 October. Before applying, please check directly with the foundation regarding the current call for applications and the deadline.
How realistic are your chances?
This award is presented to very few people. Only medical staff employed at a public hospital within the Canary Islands’ health service are eligible, meaning that very few people can even apply. If you hold such a post, work in the medical sector and have a clear plan to learn a skill that you can take home with you, your chances are good – especially if you are listed under 55.
