Autonomous Community of La Rioja - Supplementary allowances for university students outside La Rioja

What you get

You will receive up to 1,500 EUR to cover the running costs of one academic year at a Spanish university outside La Rioja. The grant is intended to supplement your day-to-day study expenses. The exact amount is determined on a case-by-case basis and must not exceed the actual costs of your studies. The funding comes from the Regional Government of La Rioja (Gobierno de La Rioja) and is aimed at students from the region who are unable to study their chosen subject in La Rioja itself. The programme is well-funded: in the 2025/2026 round, 1,429 grants were awarded.

Who can apply

• Degree or level: You are studying on an official bachelor’s degree programme (Grado), a master’s degree programme that qualifies you for a regulated profession, or an official higher education qualification in the arts (music, dance, theatre, design, conservation and restoration, or fine art). Non-qualifying Master’s programmes, PhDs and university-specific degrees will not be taken into account.
• Where you study: You are enrolled for in-person study at a Spanish university or centre outside La Rioja.
• Field of study: Any subject.
• Ties to La Rioja: You or your family are resident for tax purposes in La Rioja. The main breadwinners in your household have lived continuously in a municipality in La Rioja for at least 5 years prior to the publication of the call for applications.
• Why you study away: Your degree programme is not offered as a face-to-face course in La Rioja, or you have not been offered a place there because your admission mark was below the minimum required. You must provide official documentation to prove this.
• Income: Income limits usually apply. If you are applying for the first year for the first time, you can apply without any income limit.
• No existing degree: You do not yet hold a qualification at the same level or a higher level than the one you are applying for.
• No long gap: You have not let 2 academic years pass without enrolling.

How to apply

You must submit your application online via the La Rioja Regional Government’s electronic portal, signing it with a digital certificate (Certificado Digital FNMT). For the 2025/2026 round, applications could be submitted until 5 December. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian must submit the application on your behalf.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship is intended exclusively for students with close ties to La Rioja who are studying at another higher education institution in Spain; consequently, the pool of eligible applicants is small. However, the budget is generous, and in a single year over 1,400 scholarships were awarded, so a suitable applicant who can provide proof of their place of residence and study status has a good chance of success. First-year students have an easier time of it, as they can apply without any income limit.
