About this award / prize
What the Statistics Gibbs Prize gives you
For the best overall performance in Statistics in your final examinations, you will receive a one-off cash prize of about 253 EUR (500 GBP). This is the examined component of a Bachelor’s degree programme in Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Oxford. The prize is funded from the estate of Charles D. D. Gibbs and is awarded each year by the examiners. In addition, there are two smaller Gibbs Prizes: approximately 177 EUR (350 GBP) for the best results in Part B and approximately 76 EUR (150 GBP) for the best dissertation.
Who can apply
- University: You are studying at the University of Oxford and sitting your final exams.
- Field of study: You are enrolled on the dual degree programme in Mathematics and Statistics.
- How you win it: The prize is awarded to the best student, as determined by their performance in coursework and examination results.
- Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
How to apply
There is no application process. The examiners award the prize automatically on the basis of your academic performance and examination results. In a year when no candidate achieves a sufficiently high standard, they may decide not to award the prize.
How realistic are your chances?
This is an achievement award for the top graduate of a single degree programme at Oxford, so the field is as small as it can possibly be. You cannot specifically aim for it; it simply comes about as a result of being top of your year in mathematics and statistics. The real reward is the recognition rather than the modest sum of money.
