About this scholarship

HSE Support Foundation grants (Aalto University)

You will receive financial support for research work, writing a dissertation or completing a doctoral thesis in the field of economics at Aalto University in Finland. There are several different funding schemes, each offering different amounts of funding:

  • Full-time doctoral grant: about 2,170 EUR per month, up to a total of 26,000 EUR, so you can work full time on your PhD.
  • Emeritus professor grant: 7,500 euros per year for retired full professors who continue to carry out research and supervise PhD students.
  • Quality publication awards: 5,000 euros for an article in a high-impact specialist journal (FT50 or ABS/AJG 4*), or 2,500 euros for the next level down.
  • Patent awards: 2,000 euros for a national patent, 4,000 euros for an international patent.
  • Other grants: Funding for a Master’s thesis, linguistic proofreading of a doctoral thesis, study and research stays abroad, and travel to academic conferences at which your paper has been accepted.

The funding comes from the HSE Support Foundation, an independent Finnish foundation established in 1974 to promote research, teaching and student studies at the School of Economics. In 2023, it awarded a total of 1,117,000 euros.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You are a Master’s student, PhD student, researcher or member of staff at the Aalto University School of Business. If you have recently been admitted to one of the PhD programmes, you are also eligible to apply.
  • Researchers: You work at the business school at least half-time, or it is your academic home. Sabbatical grants go only to permanent staff.
  • Field of study: Economics and Business Administration, including projects that also relate to other subject areas.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.
  • Track record: As a researcher, please list recent articles published in peer-reviewed academic journals. Master’s and PhD students do not need to do this.

How to apply

You apply online via the Foundation’s funding service. Please submit a separate application for each purpose; for example, applications for travel and research must be submitted separately. The main rounds begin in February and September. The next round begins in February 2027, and the application deadline is at 24:00 Finnish time on the last day. Applications can be submitted throughout the year for two funding programmes: linguistic review of a final dissertation and a scholarship for Master’s theses carried out as part of corporate projects. You will be notified of the outcome (acceptance or rejection) by email.
