About this scholarship

Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation grant

You will receive a grant of up to 1 year to fund a project in the fields of science, the arts or civic engagement. The amount depends on the nature of your project and varies considerably. A small community project, for example, receives around 2,000 EUR, whilst large, multi-year research projects can amount to several hundred thousand. Research grants for PhD students – that is, funding to cover your living costs whilst you are studying for your PhD – have recently ranged from 8,000 EUR to 36,000 EUR per year. The funding comes from a Finnish charitable foundation established in 1942 to promote cultural and economic life in Finland. In the academic sector, funding is provided for doctoral and postdoctoral research in almost all disciplines. In the arts, support covers music, literature, dance and theatre, as well as the purchase of an instrument or the organisation of an event. In the civil society sector, funding is provided for youth work, voluntary civil defence, entrepreneurship and projects aimed at strengthening society.

Who can apply

  • Who you are: You can apply as an individual, as a team or as a registered organisation. Individuals usually receive work grants; organisations usually receive grants to cover their costs.
  • Link to Finland: Your project is led by a person based in Finland, takes place mainly in Finland, or has a clear connection to Finnish society.
  • Field: All scientific fields qualify, plus the named arts and civic fields. Medicine and biomedicine are not funded here. Individual visual-art projects or exhibitions usually go through separate programmes.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. The key factor is the connection between your project and Finland.
  • Age: No age limit.

How to apply

You apply through the foundation's online grant service. It opens once a year, in spring. For 2026 the deadline is 31 May at 4 p.m. Finnish time. There is no interview, so you are judged on your written application. Decisions are sent by email, and results are announced publicly on 9 October.
