About this scholarship
Eino Jutikkala Fund doctoral grant
You will receive 29,000 EUR per year to enable you to devote yourself full-time to your doctoral thesis (PhD) in the humanities, so that you do not need to undertake any paid work alongside it. The scholarship may be awarded for up to 3 consecutive years, provided your research continues to make good progress. You may also apply for additional funding for research costs using the same form. The scholarship is awarded by the Finnish Academy of Sciences (Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia), which allocates around half a million euros annually to research in the humanities. The funding year begins on 1 January following the submission of your application. A grant applied for in the spring of 2026 will therefore commence on 1 January 2027.
Who can apply
- Level: You are a PhD student and are just starting work on your thesis.
- Study right: You are eligible to undertake a PhD or have already applied to do so.
- Subject: Your field must be one of the humanities fields eligible this cycle. For 2026 these are archaeology, history, law and the social sciences. In odd years the list instead covers subjects such as art research, philosophy, education, psychology, linguistics, religious studies and Finno-Ugric languages. Cross-field work is welcome, as long as one eligible field is at its core.
- Link to Finland: Applicants of any nationality are welcome to apply. You simply need to have a connection to Finland, for example by carrying out research there.
How to apply
You apply online via the Academy’s application service during the spring period. For 2026, this runs from 24 April to 31 May at 24:00. Instead of written letters of recommendation, you should provide the names of up to two referees. The Academy’s Executive Board will make the decision, and successful applicants will be notified personally in September.
If this doctoral grant does not suit your research, you may find a fitting alternative in our guide Scholarships in Finland.
