About this scholarship
What you get
As a PhD student in a technical subject area, you can receive a research grant of up to 26,600 EUR for 12 months of full-time research. Instead of the whole year, you can choose from the following options:
- A part-year grant of up to 2,200 EUR per month, for at least 4 months.
- A 5,000 EUR encouragement grant, mainly for those working towards a Doctor of Science (Technology).
- A scholarship for a research stay abroad lasting at least 6 months, covering travel, tuition fees and similar costs.
You can also combine a scholarship with a part-time research post (up to 50% of a full-time equivalent) at a university or research institute, so that together they cover the costs of a full-time degree programme. The funding comes from a Finnish foundation that has been supporting technology research since 1949. There are also smaller scholarships available for Master’s students and separate funding opportunities for postdoctoral researchers.
Who can apply
- Level: You are accepted as a doctoral student at a Finnish university (for the main research grants). Master's-level funding also exists, through a chemical engineering fund at Aalto University and Åbo Akademi University, and a gas-themed fund for ambitious master's theses.
- Field: You work in a technical field, such as automation and robotics, energy and environmental technology, information and communications technology, materials science and nanotechnology, electrical engineering, engineering physics, biotechnology or industrial management.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply. Both Finnish and international students are welcome.
- Full-time work: To be eligible for a full-year scholarship, you must carry out your research on a full-time basis.
- You apply alone: Funding is awarded to individuals, not to research groups.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted via the Foundation’s online service. The application period runs from January to February. Scholarship recipients will be selected at the end of April, notified at the beginning of May, and publicly announced in June. The next round begins at the start of 2027. You may submit your application in Finnish or English. Selection is based primarily on the academic quality and level of ambition of your research.
