Fortum and Neste Foundation scholarship

You receive a personal work grant of up to 27,000 EUR per year to do doctoral or licentiate research in energy-related science. A licentiate is a Finnish research degree between a master's and a doctorate. On top of the grant you can apply for up to 3,000 EUR to cover costs such as lab expenses, conference fees, travel and accommodation. The grant is approved one year at a time. It can run up to 3 years for a licentiate and up to 4 years for a doctorate. If you hold a full 12-month grant, you also get free health and accident insurance through the Foundation. There is also a separate one-off grant of up to 3,000 EUR for a single project, for example attending a conference to present your research. The money comes from the Fortum and Neste Foundation, a Finnish foundation set up by the energy companies Fortum and Neste.

Who can apply

• Degree level: You have finished your undergraduate studies and are working on a licentiate or doctoral degree.
• Where you study: You can do the research in Finland or abroad, but a Finnish institution must supervise it.
• Enrolment: You study full time.
• Field of study: Your research is in natural, technical or economic science linked to the energy sector, such as climate change mitigation, cutting emissions, bio-economy, circular economy or new transport solutions.
• Nationality: All nationalities can apply, as long as a Finnish institution supervises your research.

How to apply

You apply online through the Foundation's grant system during the yearly application round, which opens in April. The next call opens in spring 2027. The Board decides in June and tells applicants by the end of that month. Payments start in August.
