Vuoksen Säätiö student grant (Opiskelija-apuraha)

You get a grant towards your final thesis at a Finnish university or university of applied sciences. The foundation sets the amount case by case, so the sum is not published in advance. If you apply while still writing, you get half once you submit your research plan and the other half once the thesis is approved. The money comes from the Vuoksen Säätiö sr. (Vuoksi Foundation), which works to preserve the heritage of two former Finnish municipalities, Antrea and Vuoksenranta, in ceded Karelia.

Who can apply

• Family background: You are a direct descendant of someone who lived in the Antrea or Vuoksenranta area in 1939, and you can prove the direct line to that adult ancestor.
• Study level: You are writing a final thesis at a university (yliopisto) or university of applied sciences, at bachelor's (amk) or master's (yamk) level, or an equivalent piece of work.
• Topic: Your thesis is about Karelian heritage, the wartime evacuation (evakkous) or the ceded territory.
• Timing: You can apply while writing, or afterwards if the thesis was finished no more than 2 years ago.
• Once only: You can get this grant only once.

How to apply

You apply through an online form. There are two rounds each year. Apply by the end of February for a decision by the end of April, or by the end of September for a decision by the end of November.
