About this scholarship
What you get
You will receive a research grant for work on the German language, translation, and German-language literature and culture. The amount is determined on a project-by-project basis; there is therefore no fixed rate. In one year, the foundation distributed around 57,000 EUR amongst 10 researchers; in another year, almost 50,000 EUR amongst 5. Individual grants for doctoral theses can start from as little as 3,000 EUR. You can use the grant to fund your own research, travel, research visits by scholars from abroad, and the organisation of conferences. Particular priority is given to research visits abroad lasting several months; the Foundation may cover reasonable travel and accommodation costs for these. The Foundation is based at the Finnish Academy of Science and Letters (Suomalainen Tiedeakatemia), which administers it. It does not cover the costs of publication, printing or editing.
A linked option is the separate Institute grant, advertised at the same time: 1,000 EUR per month for a research stay of up to 3 months at the Finnish Institute in Germany in Berlin, covering travel, accommodation and an office desk there.
Who can apply
- Who you are: You work as a researcher at a Finnish university, alongside PhD students.
- Field: Your work focuses on the German language, translation, German-language literature or the culture of the German-speaking world.
- Doctoral candidates: If you are applying for funding for a PhD programme, you must already be eligible to undertake a PhD.
- Nationality: Applicants of any nationality may apply, provided they are employed at a Finnish university.
How to apply
Applications must be submitted online via the Academy’s funding portal. The application window opens every spring; the deadline for applications is 31 May. Decisions are made in September, and successful applicants will be notified personally. Funding is paid out in October. For the scholarship offered by the Berlin Institute, please submit your application directly to the Finnish Institute in Germany instead.
