About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive a one-off research grant to fund a university dissertation or a research project on Finnish history. There is no set amount. In your application, you must state the amount required in figures and in words, and support this with a budget breakdown. For applications exceeding 1,000 EUR, you must provide your Finnish personal identification number (HETU), which suggests that most grants are in this range. The funding comes from the Matti Laurila Fund, which is administered by the Vapaussodan Invalidien Muistosäätiö (VIMS), a Finnish foundation dedicated to preserving the memory of the 1918 War.

Who can apply

  • Who it is for: You are a student or a researcher and are writing a dissertation or carrying out a research project.
  • Topic: Your work must focus on the Finnish Civil War of 1918, Finland’s path to independence, or the ‘Lotta Svärd’ women’s organisation and its activities.
  • Field of study: Any topic is fine, as long as your work focuses on one of these topics.
  • Nationality: Anyone can apply. In practice, you must be able to work in Finnish or handle Finnish-language sources.
  • Other funding: You must declare any other funding that you have applied for or have already received for the same project.

How to apply

The application deadline is 15 May. Please submit the online form at vims.yhdistysavain.fi/apurahat or send your application by email as an attachment. Please attach a plan or a brief summary of your work, a letter from your faculty or supervisor, and your financial plan. The Foundation’s Board will then review your application.
