Raija Rymin-Nevanlinna Fund travel grant

You will receive up to 2,500 EUR for a study-related trip abroad. The money covers the costs of travel undertaken during the funding period. It comes from an earmarked fund at the University of Helsinki, established through a bequest from Raija Rymin-Nevanlinna, a long-serving Russian teacher who left her estate to enable students to engage with Russian literature. The grant covers travel related to reading, researching or translating Russian texts. For example, you could attend a conference, visit an archive or take part in a translation project.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Helsinki in Finland.
• Level: You are a PhD student.
• Subject: Your work is on Russian language and literature, including its translation.
• Purpose of the trip: The period spent abroad is intended to support your studies or research abroad, not in your home country.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are studying at the university.
• Not employed by the university: You are not eligible to receive the scholarship whilst you are employed by the University of Helsinki. A gap in employment within a three-year period entitles you to receive the scholarship.

How to apply

Apply online via the university’s funding portal during the annual application round. This begins in January and ends on 6 February. Decisions will be made by the end of April, and each applicant will be informed personally of the outcome. Your application will be assessed on the basis of how far you have progressed in your studies, how important the trip is to your work, and how urgently you require financial support.
