About this scholarship

Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (France)

You will receive about 760 EUR per month (28,000 NT$) for Mandarin Chinese lessons at an accredited language centre at a university in Taiwan. The grant may be awarded for 2, 3, 6 or 9 months. The option with a duration of 9 months is only available to applicants who hold a TOCFL Level B / Level 3 (a standardised Chinese language test) taken within the last two years, or who can prove that they are registered for the next TOCFL examination session. The scholarship is provided by the Taiwanese Ministry of Education. For French nationals, it is administered by the Education Department of the Taipei Representative Office in France. It covers only your monthly stipend (living expenses). You will have to cover tuition fees, insurance, accommodation and flights yourself; you should therefore budget approximately 3,000 EUR from your own funds to cover the first two months.

Who can apply

  • Nationality: You are a French national. You must not hold a Taiwanese passport, nor be a national of mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau.
  • Age: You are at least 18 years old.
  • Education: You hold the French Baccalauréat or a higher qualification.
  • Grades: You have achieved excellent results in your current or most recent degree programme.
  • Field of study: Open to all disciplines.
  • No prior award: You have never received a ‘Huayu Enrichment’ scholarship or a Taiwan scholarship, and you are not currently in receipt of any other scholarship from a Taiwanese government body.
  • Not already on this track: You are not currently enrolled at a Taiwanese language centre, have not obtained a degree from a Taiwanese university, and are not taking part in an exchange programme with a Taiwanese institution.

How to apply

First, contact the language centre of your choice in Taiwan directly. Then register online via the Ministry of Education’s platform, complete the form provided by the Education Service, and send your full application documents by post to the Education Service in Paris. Your documents must be received by 30 March. A selection panel comprising French and Taiwanese members will assess the applications, and the results will be sent by email before the end of April.

How realistic are your chances?

This scholarship programme is highly selective: only French nationals with excellent academic results who genuinely wish to study Chinese in Taiwan are eligible, meaning the pool of applicants is limited. A portion of the monthly quota is reserved for partner universities, leaving fewer places available for independent applicants. A well-prepared application pack, demonstrating clear motivation and good grades, is crucial. If you meet the criteria and apply well in advance of the deadline, your chances are good.
