About this award / prize
The Charles Donovan Prize in Dermatology
You will receive the Charles Donovan Medal, which is minted anew each year, as well as a one-off cash prize. Both will be presented to you at the Faculty of Medicine’s awards ceremony. The money comes from a trust, so the amount varies from year to year depending on the performance of the invested capital. It is not a fixed sum. The prize is sponsored by the Department of Medicine (Dermatology) at University College Cork in conjunction with the South Infirmary/Victoria University Hospital. It honours Charles Donovan, a former student of the university who identified the causes of two skin diseases.
Who can apply
- University: You’re studying medicine at University College Cork.
- Study year: You are in your fourth year of medical school.
- Field: The prize is awarded as part of your medical degree in the field of dermatology.
- Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are currently enrolled at UCC.
How to apply
There is no separate registration process. All fourth-year students sit the multiple-choice examination in dermatology, which forms part of the continuous assessment for the CP4007 module. The four students with the best results will then be invited to an oral examination, which serves solely to determine the winner. This oral examination does not count towards your official fourth-year final examination.
