About this scholarship

What you get

You will receive 315 EUR for your one-to-one music tuition for one year. Music students at University College Cork (UCC) are required to take one-to-one tuition on an instrument with an approved teacher, and this amount helps to cover the costs. Solo singing and vocal tuition are also considered ‘instruments’. Each year, up to four students receive this grant, one of whom must take lessons on a traditional Irish instrument. The fund was established by the Dublin Post Office branch of the Communication Workers’ Union in memory of their colleague Donal Gleeson.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are currently a Bachelor’s student at University College Cork.
  • Subject: You are studying at the Department of Music and are taking the compulsory one-to-one lessons in an instrument or singing.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are enrolled at UCC.
  • Money: Your financial situation counts, so this helps if you cannot easily pay the lesson fees yourself.
  • Playing level: It all depends on your ability, which will be assessed on the basis of your end-of-year recital (a solo performance in front of the teaching staff).

How to apply

The selection process takes place within the university. The Head of the Department of Music and the Faculty of Arts, Celtic Studies and Social Sciences will select the winners based on your final performance at the end of the academic year. If you have any questions, please contact the Department of Music at UCC.
