About this award / prize

What you get

You receive a cash prize of 500 EUR for outstanding results in Irish or in Irish history at the end of your honours degree. The National University of Ireland (NUI) gives the award to reward top final-year students across its member universities and to encourage the study of the Irish language and Irish history.

Who can win it

  • Level: You are in the final year of an honours bachelor degree (BA Hons). Irish can also count where it is a final-year subject on certain other degrees, such as the BCL European or the BComm International/European.
  • Subject: You study Irish (modern, early, medieval or classical, or a mix) or Irish history.
  • Where you study: You are at one of the four NUI member universities: University College Dublin, University College Cork, University of Galway or Maynooth University.
  • Results: You have the highest marks in your subject and have passed your honours degree exams overall.
  • Nationality: Open to students of any nationality.

How to apply

You cannot apply yourself. Winners are chosen automatically from exam results. An external examiner appointed by NUI picks the recipients based on the written work of the top-scoring final-year students who have passed overall.
