About this award / prize

The Downey Prize

You receive a one-off book prize of around 750 EUR for finishing the honours Commerce degree at University College Cork (UCC) with top results. The amount can vary slightly from year to year, because the prize is paid from the yearly income of a fund set up in memory of Joseph Downey, UCC's Secretary and Bursar from 1912 to 1944. You do not apply; the prize is awarded automatically on your exam results.

Who can apply

  • Degree: You are completing the BComm (Hons), the four-year honours undergraduate Commerce degree at UCC.
  • University: You’re studying at University College Cork in Ireland.
  • Time at UCC: You were a student at UCC for the four years immediately prior to your final examination.
  • Timing: You take your final degree exam within three years of passing the First University Examination in Commerce.
  • Results: You achieved a mark in the final examination for the ‘BComm (Hons)’ Bachelor’s degree programme this summer which the Academic Board has deemed to be sufficiently high.
  • Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they are currently enrolled at UCC.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The prize is awarded automatically on the basis of your examination results in the summer upon completion of the ‘BComm (Hons)’ Bachelor’s degree programme; the decision is made by the Academic Board (the body responsible for overseeing academic standards at UCC).
