About this award / prize

The Edward Gurr Prize

For outstanding achievements in histology – the study of tissues under the microscope – you will receive a one-off prize of around 800 EUR. This prize is awarded annually by the Institute of Anatomy and Neuroscience at University College Cork (UCC). It is funded by a donation from Dr Edward Gurr, who ran a laboratory in London producing stains for histology. Two prizes are awarded each year, one for medical students and one for dental students, each worth approximately 800 EUR.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are enrolled at University College Cork.
  • Medical prize: You are a first-year medical student. Your marks in anatomy as part of your continuous assessment (modules FM1001, FM1002, FM1003) are among the best 10% in your year group.
  • Dental prize: You are a second-year dental student and have achieved the highest marks in your year group in the ‘Oral Histology’ section of the AN2008 module.
  • Histology work: The Professor of Anatomy rates your histology notebooks (medical) or oral histology spot exam (dental) as good enough.
  • Strong enough results: The prize will only be awarded if your performance is good enough. In a poor year, it may not be awarded at all.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. A committee from the Department of Anatomy and Neuroscience decides on the award of the prize based on your results in the relevant anatomy examination.
