About this award / prize

The Gaffney Prize

You receive 250 EUR and a medal if you earn the top mark in the anaesthesiology part of your final-year research report at University College Cork (UCC). The award is given once a year by the university's Anaesthesia Research and Education Fund. It is named after Dr Desmond Gaffney, a former head of anaesthesia at Cork University Hospital.

Who can apply

  • University: You study medicine at UCC's School of Medicine.
  • Study stage: You start the qualifying research project in the third year of the five-year direct-entry course, or the second year of the four-year graduate-entry course. The prize is decided in your final year.
  • Research topic: Your project deals with anaesthesia, care of patients around surgery, pain treatment or intensive care.
  • Supervisor: A senior hospital doctor in one of these fields oversees your project.
  • Nationality: Any nationality can apply, as long as you are enrolled at UCC.
  • One-time rule: You can win the prize only once.

As a bonus, your marks for the literature-search part of the project also decide who UCC puts forward for the national Dr Henry Hutchinson Stewart Scholarship in anaesthesia, sat the following year.

How to apply

There is no separate application. You enter by choosing a qualifying research project in your third year (direct entry) or second year (graduate entry). The prize goes automatically to the final-year student with the highest mark. For questions, contact the UCC School of Medicine.
