About this award / prize

The MacConaill Prize

You will receive a one-off cash prize of 150 EUR, which is awarded once a year by University College Cork (UCC). The money comes from an endowment fund, so the exact amount may vary slightly from year to year. The prize is awarded to the second-year medical student who demonstrates the most original thinking in the Clinical Anatomy Prize examination. The family of the late Professor Michael A. MacConaill, who taught anatomy at UCC for many years, established the prize in his memory.

Who can apply

  • Where you study: You are enrolled in the second year of your medical degree at University College Cork.
  • Field: Medicine, specialising in anatomy.
  • Exam record: You passed all your summer medical exams in your first year of study at the first attempt, without having to sit any resits or being granted any exemptions.
  • Grades: Your combined anatomy marks place you in the top 10% of your class across the relevant modules (FM1010, FM1020, FM1030, FM1040, FM2101 and FM2102).
  • Nationality: Open to students of all nationalities.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. To take part, you simply need to sit the Clinical Anatomy Prize examination. The Professor of Anatomy will select the winner based on the originality of your answers. The prize will only be awarded if the work is truly outstanding.
