About this award / prize

SEFS Quercus Scholar Medal

You receive a Quercus Scholar Medal, a physical award for the top undergraduate students at University College Cork (UCC) in the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science (SEFS). Each year UCC gives 7 medals in each of the first, second and third years, so 21 in total. It honours outstanding exam results. Note: this is a title and medal, not a cash payment.

Who can get it

  • University: You are currently registered in the College of Science, Engineering and Food Science at UCC.
  • Study phase: You are in your first, second or third year of an undergraduate SEFS programme.
  • Grades: You achieve at least First Class Honours (the top grade band) and rank among the best in your subject group. The two groups are: (1) engineering, mathematical sciences, computer science and physics; (2) life sciences, biological, earth and environmental sciences, food and nutritional sciences, and chemistry.
  • Timing: You pass the previous year's exams in the minimum time, on your first attempt in the summer exam session. Exceptions apply only for serious prolonged illness or an approved autumn or split sitting.
  • Transfer students: If you come from another university, you qualify only if you are enrolled in a higher-level degree than the one you already hold.

How to apply

There is no application. UCC awards the medals automatically based on your end-of-year exam results. You can send questions to the College.

How realistic are your chances?

21 medals are given each year, 7 per year group. In each subject group the top three students get a medal. A seventh medal in each year goes to the fourth-ranked student in whichever group has the smallest gap between third and fourth place.
