University College Cork - The Seán Ó Riada Memorial Prize

The Seán Ó Riada Memorial Prize

You will receive a one-off cash prize of around 400 EUR if you demonstrate the deepest understanding of traditional Irish music during your final-year music degree at University College Cork (UCC). The exact amount varies slightly from year to year, as the prize is funded by the income from an endowment fund and depends on the performance of the investments. Colleagues of Seán Ó Riada established the prize in his memory. He taught at the Department of Music at UCC from 1963 to 1971.

Who can apply

• Degree: You sit the final examination for your music degree (BMus Hons) at UCC for the first time and pass it.
• Subject strength: The examiners consider that, in your academic work, in your performances, or in both, you have demonstrated a particularly deep understanding of traditional Irish music.
• University: You have been studying at UCC for the four years immediately prior to this final examination.
• Timing: You passed your first university examination in music no more than three years before sitting your final examination.
• Standard reached: UCC's Academic Council confirms you reached a high enough standard.
• Nationality: Any nationality can apply.

How to apply

There is no separate application process. The examiners select the winner as part of your final examination, so you will automatically be considered as soon as you sit the exam.
