About this award / prize
Premio SIAA 'Ruggero Ricci' for the best doctoral thesis
You get a prize of 600 EUR for an outstanding PhD thesis in applied anthropology, plus a plaque and certificate. You are also invited to the award ceremony at the national SIAA congress in Siena (16-19 December 2026). You can publish an article based on your thesis in the journal 'Antropologia Pubblica'. The prize comes from the Italian Society of Applied Anthropology (SIAA), which recognises young researchers whose work has real-world impact.
Who can apply

- Timing: You defended your thesis between 1 April 2022 and 30 April 2026.

- Topic: Your thesis has clear practical relevance, for example in public policy, social inclusion, vulnerability, social inequality or sustainability.
- Unpublished: Your thesis has not been published.
- Nationality: Anyone can apply, with or without Italian citizenship.
- Language: Your thesis is written in Italian, English, French or Spanish.
How to apply
You apply by email with your thesis as a PDF, a copy of your doctoral certificate and a valid ID. The 2026 round opens on 15 April 2026 and closes on 1 June 2026. The jury announces its decision by 30 November 2026.
How realistic are your chances?
This is a single award for a narrow group: recent PhD theses in applied anthropology defended within a set four-year window. The eligible pool is small, which works in your favour. But only one thesis wins each edition, so a clear applied focus and strong method decide it. If your work fits the themes closely, your prospects are solid.
