Fee benefits for out-of-course students at the University of Genoa

Are you still enrolled at the University of Genoa after the official duration of your degree programme has ended? If so, you are considered ‘fuori corso’ (a student who has exceeded the standard duration of their degree programme). The benefit does not take the form of a cash payment, but rather a reduced tuition fee: Your fees may be capped or partially waived, rather than being paid in full. The amount of your tuition fees normally depends on your family’s income, which is determined on the basis of the ISEE-U declaration that you submit each year. There are two schemes available to students who are behind in their studies. Firstly: if your ISEE-U is between 0 and 30,000 EUR and you have earned at least 25 credit points (CFU) in the 12 months prior to 10 August, your fee may not exceed the reduced rate by more than 50%, with a minimum of 200 EUR. Secondly: If, by 31 March, you only have your final exam left to take, you will automatically receive a discount of 50% on the third instalment of the fee.

Who can apply

• University: You are enrolled at the University of Genoa in Italy.
• Study status: You are ‘fuori corso’, which means you have exceeded the standard duration of study for your degree. This applies to all degree programmes (Bachelor’s, Master’s, single-cycle Master’s, old system).
• Field of study: Open to all subjects.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply; they simply need to be enrolled at the University of Genoa.
• Income (for the fee cap): Your ISEE-U is between 0 and 30,000 EUR.
• Study progress (for the fee cap): You have earned at least 25 credit points (CFU) in the 12 months prior to 10 August.
• Watch out: If you have not been a student for 3 years or more and earned fewer than 25 credits in the last year, you will instead pay a surcharge on top of the standard fee.

How to apply

No separate application is required. The benefits are calculated automatically on the basis of the ISEE-U income declaration, which you submit online each year. The 50% deduction for final-year students is applied automatically. The cut-off date is 31 March, on which your status regarding the exams you still have to sit is checked.

How realistic are your chances?

This is not a competitive grant, but a provision enshrined in the University of Genoa’s fee system; consequently, there is neither a selection process nor a pool of applicants. If your income and your credits meet the thresholds, or if you only have your final examination left to sit, the reduction applies to you automatically. The main risk is, in fact, the opposite: if you do not attend your course for several years without earning any credits, a surcharge will apply instead.
