What the GARR "Orio Carlini" scholarship gives you

You will receive 19,000 EUR gross for a 12-month research project, paid monthly by bank transfer. You may extend this for a further 12 months if you propose a follow-up project and GARR has the necessary funding available. GARR is the Italian network for universities and research. It awards 10 of these scholarships grants each year. You will carry out your project at a university, a research institute or another organisation connected to the GARR network, or at a GARR site itself. You will also have access to GARR’s infrastructure and will present your work at GARR events and at the annual conference. The best projects may take part in the ‘Future Talent Programme’ run by the European GEANT network and be presented at the TNC conference for research networks.

Who can apply

• Age: You are 30 or younger.
• Degree: You hold a bachelor’s degree from an Italian or EU university, an equivalent qualification from a single-cycle degree programme, or a recognised equivalent qualification.
• Your project: You will contribute your own research idea in the field of ICT (Information and Communication Technology), for example on topics such as distributed computing, cloud computing, open science, blockchain, machine learning, cyber security or optical networks. You will choose the exact topic yourself.
• Where you work: Before applying, you must find a host institution connected to the GARR network, as well as a supervisor there who will support you.
• Field of study: Any field of study is suitable, provided your project uses technology to develop innovative digital infrastructures and services.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, provided they meet the language requirements.
• Language: You need a good command of Italian and English. Native speakers of Italian are automatically eligible. Native speakers of English must have a command of Italian at level B1. Other native speakers must hold a C1 certificate in Italian or a C1 certificate in English, as well as a knowledge of Italian at level B1.
• No double funding: The scholarship cannot be combined with any other scholarship, research grant, PhD scholarship or salary. However, it can be combined with a Master’s degree programme or an unfunded PhD place, provided that the research topics are compatible.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted via the online form on the GARR website by 15 December. Please attach your CV, your research project and a letter of invitation from your host institution. Shortlisted candidates will sit an oral examination lasting approximately 40 minutes between December and January. During this, you will present your project and answer questions from the examination board.

How realistic are your chances?

This award is highly selective. You must be under 30, have an ICT project ready, and secure a host on the GARR network as well as a supervisor before you even apply. This already significantly narrows down the field of applicants. With only 10 places available per year and a selection process based on an oral presentation of your idea, the quality and originality of your project are the deciding factors. If you clearly meet the requirements and can demonstrate a compelling, well-prepared project as well as a committed host, your chances are good.
