Regional DSU scholarship at the University of Milan

Whilst studying at the University of Milan, from your second year onwards you will receive an annual scholarship of 421 euros as well as free lunches in the university canteen (Mondays to Saturdays). The amount you receive depends on your family’s income and how far you live from the university. Students who live too far away to commute receive the highest amount, commuters receive a medium amount, and students from the local area receive the lowest amount. A full scholarship also means that you do not pay any tuition fees; with a partial scholarship, you will receive a reduction of 50%. In addition to the grant, you can apply for affordable accommodation in a student hall of residence, a supplement of 600 EUR per month (for up to 10 months) if you are studying abroad, and a bonus if you complete your degree on time. The scholarship is funded by the Lombardy Region and the Italian Ministry of Higher Education and Research. It is awarded once a year following a public selection process.

Who can apply

• Where you study: You are enrolled at the University of Milan.
• Study year: You are in your second year of study or above.
• Field of study: Any subject is eligible, whether at Bachelor’s, Master’s or single-cycle Master’s level.
• Nationality: Applicants of all nationalities are welcome to apply, including international students. Your income and assets held abroad will be assessed separately.
• Financial need: Your household income, as measured by the Italian ISEE indicator, is below the threshold set annually. The ISEE is Italy’s official measure of household income and assets.
• Academic progress: You have earned a certain number of ECTS credits and achieved a good weighted average mark. As your ranking depends on both of these, you must pass your exams at a steady pace.
• Not eligible: You are not eligible to apply if you are studying part-time, repeating a year, already hold a qualification at the same or a higher level, or are already receiving a similar scholarship for the same academic year.

How to apply

Applications must be submitted online via the university’s online helpdesk between 10 July and 30 September 2026, once you have registered on the UniMi portal. The provisional ranking lists will be published at the end of October, and the final ones at the end of November.

How realistic are your chances?

This funding is based on your income and academic progress, rather than on a fixed number of scholarships. If your ISEE score is below the threshold and you have earned enough credits, you are in a strong position and will not have to compete against a large number of applicants. The biggest hurdle is meeting the income threshold and passing your exams on schedule. Apply before the deadline in September and ensure that your credits are properly recorded.
